Professor Marjorie Cohn Publishes New Book on Bush Administration
Professor Marjorie Cohn as published her latest book, Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied the Law.
The publisher, PoliPointPress, says: “Cowboy Republic describes the six most important ways the Bush Administration has weakened the rule of law. Marjorie Cohn explains what we can do to remedy the administration’s breaches of statutory, constitutional, and international law including political and legal remedies.”
“From the political firings of the US Attorneys, to Dick Cheney's claim that he is not constrained by rules governing the executive branch, to Bush's commutation of Lewis "Scooter" Libby's sentence, this administration continues to misuse its power to the detriment of the people,” says Professor Cohn. “In this book, I analyze Bush's war of aggression against Iraq, the torture of prisoners, summary executions and willful killings, the Guantánamo gulag, warrantless spying on Americans and Mr. Bush's signing statements saying he will obey only those laws with which he agrees. The book concludes with proposals for legal and political solutions to hold the Bush gang accountable.”
Geoffrey Stone, former Dean of University of Chicago Law School, calls Cowboy Republic “an important cautionary tale about the perils that can befall a democracy when the arrogance of power outstrips the reasoned constraints of the law.”
Political activist Daniel Ellsberg says, “This devastating, utterly compelling account of the crimes and usurpations of the Bush administration will convince all but the perpetrators themselves of the urgent need not only for investigations and prompt impeachments, but also for criminal prosecutions.”
Professor Cohn has also co-authored Cameras in the Courtroom: Television and the Pursuit of Justice. She is a contributing editor to Jurist, MWC News Magazine and Guild Practitioner and a frequent columnist for AlterNet, Counter¬punch, CommonDreams, AfterDowningStreet, Buzzflash, ZNet and Global Research.
