International Law (SD 238)
This course provides worldwide perspectives on International law. It contains many US resources as well, given the US leadership role in the War on Terror. Students will analyze numerous current events, while plugging the historical gaps associated with educating the well-rounded student. The first of three course segments introduces the general scope of International Law, coupled with casting the State, organizational, and individual/corporate actors in their respective roles on the international stage. The second course unit portrays much of the practical substance of International Law-jurisdiction, sovereignty, treaties, dispute resolution, and the use of force. The third course unit adds substance in a somewhat distinct medium-by its appraisal of human rights, environmental, and economic themes. The course also exposes the student to web-based materials which offer a rich smorgasbord of materials linked to today's dominant international developments. From the Course Web page, students may link to key cases, treaties, and academic developments occurring after publication of the course text. The book's electronic component also includes online dictionaries, graduate education opportunities, historical resources, maps, travel requirements, and a Career Opportunities in International Law Webpage, to assist with office-hour questions regarding how one navigates the shift from an academic environment to the international job market. The course employs a modified moot court format-providing each student with the opportunity to argue at least a half-dozen assigned debates during the semester. These role playing problems and case studies facilitate student comprehension of International Law. One component of the course grade will be the semester grade for all oral debates. Performance-styled testing, in a document-oriented environment, further promotes the skills-oriented objectives of the course. These evaluative components enable the student to do what international lawyers do in practice.
