Estate Planning & Taxation

This practice-oriented course explores estate planning in community property states. It provides an overview of the federal gift tax, federal estate tax and federal income tax issues. Topics covered include probate avoidance techniques, suitability and use of revocable inter-vivos ("living") trusts, planning for non-U.S. citizen spouse, irrevocable trusts, planning with insurance, and computation of the gift tax and estate tax. The matters covered in class are illustrated by examples drawn from current estate planning techniques. As part of the course the students will prepare an actual estate plan.
