Professor Vandevelde’s diverse career has included representing the United States before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, American Indian tribes before the U.S. Supreme Court and private American citizens at the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. After graduation from law school in 1979, he joined the Washington, D.C. office of a major New York law firm, specializing in litigation on behalf of American Indian tribes. From 1982 until 1988, he practiced international law with the State Department Legal Adviser’s Office. After a year with a San Diego law firm, Professor Vandevelde joined the full-time faculty of the Whittier College School of Law, having previously taught as an adjunct at the University of Maryland School of Law. He joined the Thomas Jefferson faculty in 1991. The following year, Professor Vandevelde published his book, United States Investment Treaties: Policy and Practice, and since that time has served as a consultant on international law to Japan, Lithuania, Slovakia, the Republic of Georgia, the United Nations and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has lectured on the subject of international investment law in some 16 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and the Caribbean. His articles on international law have appeared in such journals as the American Journal of International Law, the Harvard International Law Journal and the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. His second book, Thinking Like a Lawyer, was published in 1996. In recent years, Professor Vandevelde’s career has focused on administration. In 1992, a year after joining the faculty, Professor Vandevelde was appointed Associate Dean. Two years later, he was named Dean, serving in that capacity from 1994 until 2005. During his tenure as Dean, the law school separated from its former parent institution, adopted the name Thomas Jefferson School of Law, acquired the Courtyard Building and several smaller properties, obtained provisional and then full ABA accreditation, converted to a nonprofit institution of higher education, and achieved a Princeton Review ranking of fifth in the nation for the quality of life on campus. After a year’s research leave, Professor Vandevelde returned to the classroom in 2006. He recently was recognized as one of San Diego’s Top Attorneys in Academics for 2006. Oxford University Press will publish his third book, U.S. International Investment Agreements, in 2008 and his fourth book, Bilateral Investment Treaties: History, Policy and Interpretation, in 2009.
