Now It's a Giant Sloth! Home » Welcome

What were the chances of finding a prehistoric mammoth on the construction site?

And what were the odds of finding an ancient whale underneath the mammoth?

And now...would you believe...what could be the remains of a giant ground sloth!

The remains of what may be an ancient sloth were found on Friday, March 7, by Pat Sena, the same paleontologist from the San Diego Natural History Museum who found the mammoth and whale remains on the construction site of the new Thomas Jefferson School of Law campus at 11th and Island Avenues, in Downtown San Diego's East Village.

So far, Sena has found tooth fragments, skull fragments and part of a vertebra. According to Sena, the bones are "poorly preserved" and may not be collectible.

Sena adds that this is a very rare find, and that the animal may have stood 6-8

feet tall and measured 10-12 feet in length.

Though a species of sloth named after Thomas Jefferson - Megalonyx jeffersonii  existed, it is too soon to tell whether this find could be one of those.

If it does turn out to be Megalonyx jeffersonii, who would be surprised at this point?
