September 18, 2006 When: Where: San Diego -- Thomas Jefferson School of Law's Center for Law and Social Justice will host a unique national event, co-sponsored by the National Lawyers Guild's TJSL student chapter. The Guantánamo Teach-In, "A Prison Beyond the Law: How Should We Respond to the Problem of Guantánamo Bay" takes place on Thursday, October 5, 2006, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the law school’s Courtyard Building, located at 2120 San Diego Avenue in Room 100. With more than 200 schools participating in 44 states, Thomas Jefferson School of Law is proud to be the San Diego host site of this singular event. Students and faculty from California Western School of Law and the USD Law School have been invited to participate. The event features a simulcast presentation from Seton Hall School of Law, and on-site luncheon speakers Thomas Jefferson School of Law Professor Marjorie Cohn, president-elect of the National Lawyers Guild, and Legal Director, ACLU Foundation of San Diego and Imperial Counties David Blair-Loy. Guantánamo is an issue about which many people are concerned. At the same time, many also feel ill-informed about the legal, political, moral, and global implications of our government's actions there. This event is an opportunity to examine Guantánamo with the help of experts drawn from the legal and medical professions, the world of journalism, and the clergy. There will be four sessions: Breakfast Session: 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
Midmorning Session: 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Luncheon Lecture Session: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Afternoon Session: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Teach-In website: Including the event program, and the list of participating schools: http://law.shu.edu/guantanamoteachin.
