The yearly summer “FaceLift” event took place on June 9, and several members of the TJSL alumni community participated, including Ray Ryan ‘05, Steve Burke ‘06, Carmela Blair ‘09, Steve Matcha ‘06, and house captain Caron Woodward ‘06, as part of the San Diego County Bar Association’s team.

FaceLift is a wonderful event sponsored by Community Housing Works, in which hundreds of volunteers join forces to clear debris, paint and landscape a city block in the City Heights area of San Diego

The home that the SDCBA worked on was located on Maple Street in the Swan Canyon neighborhood of City Heights. We worked hard for about 6 hours to improve the property. Ray Ryan and Steve Matcha were a big help in digging a large trench and laying pavers to create a safer sidewalk area in the front of the property, and Carmela Blair helped to paint the exterior walls and fence of the home. Steve Burke helped with the landscaping plan and planted new plants and bushes. Caron Woodward served as the house captain and also helped with landscaping and painting new security doors for the home.

“The homeowners were so grateful for all of our hard work in helping to clean up the neighborhood. They were right out there with us, spreading mulch and painting,” said Caron Woodward.  “They were excited because they had seen how other neighborhoods that have been helped by FaceLift have had a reduction in crime, and an increase in neighbors looking out for each other, and were looking forward to that kind of fresh start.”
