Judge Lillian Y. Lim, TJSL's "Alum of the Year."
The SBA Annual Barrister’s Ball at the lavish Loews Coronado Bay Resort on Friday, March 24, 2006, proved to be an enjoyable time for all. The nearly 200 guests experienced a great night of dinner and dancing. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of various recognition awards, including the A. Thomas Golden Alum of the Year Award, which was presented to a very deserving San Diego Superior Court judge, the Honorable Lillian Y. Lim (‘77).

to Judge Lim.
Professor Golden had the privilege of announcing the Alum of the Year Award at the ball. As Professor Golden noted, Judge Lim is the first Filipino-American woman appointed as a judge in the United States. After graduating from the law school, Judge Lim was a Deputy Attorney General in San Diego until her appointment to the bench by then California Governor George Deukmajian on January 17, 1986. She has earned many honors during her distinguished career and has been active in several professional organizations, including the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego and the Filipino Lawyers of San Diego. In addition to teaching “Trial Practice” courses at TJSL over the years, Judge Lim was instrumental in helping students organize their own Pan Asian Law Society (now known as Asian Pacific American Law Students Association) in the mid-1990s and has remained a constant supporter and advisor of the group. Judge Lim joins 2005 recipient Randy Grossman (’94) and 2004 inaugural recipient Denise Asher (’94) as alums to be honored with this prestigious award. Students make nominations for the award and then a selection committee makes the final choice.

Other awards presented at the ball included the much-anticipated Golden Apple Awards, which go to favorite professors as voted on by the students. This year’s Golden Apples statues went to Professor Anders Kaye and Professor Golden in the required courses categories. The Apple winners for elective courses were Professor Aaron Schwabach and adjunct Professor Jane L. Siegel, who also is director of the very successful TJSL Mock Trial Program.

On behalf of the National Lawyers Guild, Professor Marjorie Cohn announced the student recipient of the Charles T. Bumer Civil Libertarian Award, named after the late Charles “Ted” Bumer. Bumer was a prominent criminal defense attorney who did a great deal of pro bono work in support of the civil rights and anti-war movements. The Bumer book award went to third-year student, Jennifer Wells. Standing on the stage during the presentation was Bumer’s daughter Elizabeth Bumer (’83).
