CGLS and NLG Welcome Guest Speakers William Aceves and Marc Falkoff on U.S. Detention Policy

The Center for Global Legal Studies at Thomas Jefferson and the National Lawyers Guild welcome Professor William Aceves and attorney Marc Falkoff as they address U.S. Detention Policy in the “Global War on Terror” on Monday, March 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. in CYB 200.

Professor Aceves will discuss “Unlawful Combatants, POWs, and All Things in Between.” Professor Aceves is Professor of Law and Director of the International Legal Studies Program at California Western School of Law. He specializes in human rights and international law and writes extensively in these fields. He frequently works with Amnesty International, the Center for Justice & Accountability, the Center for Constitutional Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union on projects involving the domestic application of international law.

Marc Falkoff will speak on “Treatment of Guantanamo Detainees.” Mr. Falkoff is currently a litigation associate at Covington & Burling in New York. He is the principal attorney for 17 Yemeni men who have been detained at Guantanamo Bay. He has represented them in legal proceedings and has advocated their claims in discussions with the media, arguing that the prisoners have been subjected to various forms of mistreatment, including religious abuse.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome. CGLS students are strongly encouraged to attend. A light lunch will be served. Please RSVP to ssecord@tjsl.edu by Thursday, March 16.
