Former Death Row Inmate Turned Pentecostal Preacher to Speak at TJSL on February 9, 2006

SAN DIEGO – Billy Neal Moore was sentenced to Georgia’s death row after confessing to the 1974 murder of a 77-year-old man. Moore was 22-years-old when he fired the fatal shot during a robbery. Surprisingly, the victim’s family not only forgave Moore, but also was so moved by his remorse that they began to campaign to set him free, a campaign that Mother Theresa and Jesse Jackson later joined.

In 1990, after losing several appeals and spending almost 17 years on death row, Moore’s case finally reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ordered a 30-day stay of execution. A mere seven days before his scheduled execution, Moore was released on parole for good behavior. Now an ordained Pentecostal minister, the former inmate regularly speaks at colleges and universities around the nation, spreading the message that he is living proof that a wasted life can in fact be revived for the good of humanity.

The public is invited to come and hear Moore speak this Thursday, Feb. 9, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., in Room 200 of the Courtyard Building at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. The event is sponsored by the TJSL Student Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

Moore has written a book about his experience, including his firsthand account of life on death row, titled I Shall Not Die: Seventy-Two Hours on Death Watch. He currently resides in Rome, Georgia, with his family.
