First-Year Student Passes Away
In Memoriam: Chad Novotny
Thomas Jefferson School of Law lost an outstanding first-year student on November 16, 2003. Chad Novotny passed away suddenly at his San Diego home after falling into a diabetic coma resulting from severe dehydration.
Chad’s law school held a memorial service on campus for the young man from Madison, Wisconsin, Wednesday morning, November 26, paying tribute to his example as a student. Already popular with students and active in his academics, Chad quickly made an impact on his professors and classmates. His big smile, tall frame and friendly personality set him apart.
Professor Joy Delman, Chad’s Torts professor, said in her tribute, “He was always wearing that great big smile.” Professor Delman noted that Chad showed how precious the gift of life really is, giving students and professors much to be thankful for during the holiday season.
“You realize what you have and appreciate it,” added Student Bar Association President Chris Burk of Chad’s death.
“Chad's mother wanted everyone to know that Chad loved attending law school at Thomas Jefferson and that his family will be making a gift to the school in Chad's name," wrote Dean Ken Vandevelde in an e-mail announcing Chad's passing to the school. "Chad loved everything about his experience here. He loved the study of law and he loved the people he met here. He was, of course, an outstanding student with a wonderful future ahead of him. We can honor Chad by making the most of our gift of life."
Doves were released at the end of the ceremony representing Chad, his family and his friends at Thomas Jefferson.
In lieu of flowers, Chad’s family asked
that donations be made to
the American Diabetic Society.
