SAN DIEGO -- The Thomas Jefferson School of Law’s Center for Law and Social Justice will host a screening of the award-winning documentary “Mardi Gras: Made in China” on Friday, February 23 from 11:30 am - 1:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the law school’s Courtyard Building at 2120 San Diego Avenue. Director David Redmon will be on hand to discuss his film and answer questions.
“Mardi Gras: Made in China,” tag-lined “Beads, Breasts, and Business: A Story of "Globalization Gone Wild!,” takes us from the streets of pre-Katrina New Orleans during Mardi Gras – where young Americans party wildly in the streets – to a highly-disciplined factory in China where Mardi Gras beads are manufactured by teenage girls.
What David Redmon captures is a vivid portrait touching on the themes of global justice, cultural practices, and how the activities of those in other countries affect life in the U.S. and vice versa. The film is ultimately a tribute to the human spirit.
According to the film’s official synopsis:
“The film confronts both cultural and economic globalism by humanizing the commodity chain from China to the United States. Redmon follows the stories of four teenage women workers in the largest Mardi Gras bead factory in the world, providing insights into their economic realities, self-sacrifice, and dreams of a better life, and the severe discipline imposed by living and working in a factory compound.”
