There are an abundance of good free legal websites that contain the two types of legal authority -- primary and secondary authority.

Primary authority is the actual law as enacted by the government, and includes case law, constitutions, legislative codes, court rules and the like.

Secondary authority explains the law and is invaluable at the start of a research project in a subject area for which you do not have complete knowledge. Examples of secondary authority are law review articles or other narrations about a particular area of law.
