Upper Level Writing Requirements

To fulfill The Upper Level Writing Requirement,  students must enroll in one of the approved courses and satisfactorily complete the assignments in the course. Merely obtaining a minimal passing grade in such a course does not necessarily satisfy the upper level writing requirement. The upper level writing requirement may also be satisfied by a directed study project.

The Upper Level Writing Requirement must be completed after a student completes Legal Writing II and before a student begins his or her final semester of law school.

Satisfactory completion of the assignments in any of the approved courses shall include:

1. A final written product that meets professional standards both in its substance and in its writing style; and

2. A final product or products that are equal in length and difficulty to a 15 page appellate brief; and

3. One of the following:

A. At least two drafts of two or more of the writing assignments; or

B. A series of assignments related to one substantial writing assignment, such as a sequence that includes a research plan or a research log, a detailed outline, and at least two drafts.

Courses may be approved to fulfill the upper level writing requirement if they:

1. Require satisfactory completion of the assignments listed above; and

2. Provide a substantial written and oral feedback on writing assignments; and

3. Use writing assignments as the basis for 50% or more of the students' grade.

Prerequisite: None
