Women & the Law,
This course explores the relationship of law to the position of women in our society. The class will focus on the part that our laws play in reinforcing the inequality of women. We will also discuss the potential of legal reform and other strategies to resolve problems involving gender inequality. To help develop effective strategies, we will be discussing a number of different feminist theories and how various theoretical approaches could lead to alternate strategies for law reform. The topics that may be covered include: Women and Work (women in the legal profession and other workplaces, Title VII, equal protection litigation, pregnancy and the workplace, sexual harassment, and sex role stereotyping); Women and the Family (reproduction, divorce, adoption); and Women and Their Bodies (pornographpy, rape, prostitution, domestic violence).
This course is graded non-anonymously and may satisfy the upper level writing requirement.
