World Trade Organization Law,

This course covers all of the different World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements and cases decided to date. It also covers a brief review of the major U.S. import/export laws. Issues include, for example, import bans on food products such as hormone-fed beef, genetically modified organisms, and chicken products from China that might contain the SARS virus, compulsory licensing of patents under the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (the TRIPS Agreement) to allow developing countries to produce generic medicines, and subsidies provided by various foreign countries to encourage the U.S. film industry to film its movies in those countries. Student grade is based on class participation (20% of final grade), a mid-term covering major international trade and WTO law issues (30% of final grade), and a hypothetical WTO case presented to the class in a legal brief and oral argument (50% of final grade).

Prerequisites: None.
