Veterans Clinic Awarded Fellowship

September 13, 2010

VLAC Fellowship

Thomas Jefferson School of Law’s Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic (VLAC), working in conjunction with the San Diego Office of the Primary Public Defender, has been awarded an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellowship for the current academic year.

This award will provide funding for an attorney to work full time on matters of mutual interest to the two offices. More particularly, the fellow will work primarily on criminal law matters involving recently returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, and in helping to establish San Diego’s Veterans Treatment Court, which is scheduled to begin hearing cases later this year.

TJSL graduate William “Ed” Neusteter ‘07, who previously served as a fellow in the Veterans Clinic during the 2008-09 academic year, has been hired for the position according to VLAC director Professor Steve Berenson. “This award amounts to recognition from important policy makers in Washington, D.C. of the work that is being done on behalf of veterans by TJSL students here in San Diego County,” said Professor Berenson.
