Professor Cohn Lectures About Her Book in Ventura

Professor Cohn in Ventura

Professor Marjorie Cohn gave a presentation on May 6 at the Foster Library in Ventura about her book The United States and Torture: Interrogation, Incarceration, and Abuse, which she edited.

The event was sponsored by Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions, Veterans for Peace No. 112 and Cindy Piester of Pulse TV.

“There is a strong activist progressive community in Ventura,” said Professor Cohn.  “Folks were very concerned about the torture and abuse perpetrated by the Bush administration and the refusal of the Obama administration to bring those responsible to justice.”

The United States and Torture was released to critical acclaim in 2011, and is a collection of chapters on U.S. practices, including waterboarding, sleep deprivation, sensory manipulation and other enhanced interrogation techniques.

“I hope this book will be of interest to readers who seek to learn about the cruelty our government has visited upon others under the guise of national security,” said Professor Cohn.

Two articles in advance of Professor Cohn’s lecture appeared in Ventura area newspapers last week.
