Experience Thomas Jefferson School of Law

Thomas Jefferson School of Law is located in a new, modern campus in the heart of the downtown legal community and within a short walk of San Diego’s courthouses, many of its major law firms, and the offices of various federal, state, and local agencies. Numerous opportunities for internships or part-time or summer jobs are available in the immediate area.

Students looking for a place to gather with their friends or the members of their study group for lunch will find a variety of restaurants within a two or three block radius. The Gaslamp District (which is a part of the nightlife scene), Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres and a popular venue for concerts), the magnificent harbor, Seaport Village, and Little Italy are all within walking distance of the campus. Many students find housing in the downtown area as well, while others commute to campus, either by car or by public transportation. A San Diego Trolley stop is just a couple of blocks away.

Many students choose to attend Thomas Jefferson because of its location in beautiful San Diego. Known as “America’s Finest City,” San Diego is the eighth largest city in the United States, offering all of the professional, social, recreational, and cultural benefits of a cosmopolitan coastal community. As the fifth largest economy in the world, California offers opportunities for practice in almost every area of the law.

A law school, however, is much more than its campus or its location. The most important part of any law school is the people who form the law school community. Our students are a diverse and very lively mix of aspiring lawyers from all over the country and the world. They become comrades-in-arms from the first day of law school and, often, lifelong friends thereafter.

Our community also comprises our 7000 alumni, who are an important part of the San Diego legal community and who include many judges, elected officials, law firm partners, and past presidents of both the county bar association and the statewide attorneys’ association. These alumni can be a source of mentorships and job opportunities. And, if you talk to the alumni, they will often tell you that their fondest memories of law school include the inspiration that they drew from a talented and experienced faculty and the support provided by our dedicated staff.

“I chose to attend TJSL for its excellent location and because I wanted the experience of a smaller campus.  TJSL has provided me unique opportunities to establish personal relationships with professors who have helped me gain insight into my future legal career. TJSL’s special focus on bar passage through its Academic Success and Bar Preparation department has given me outstanding study skills, furthering my confidence that with the right amount of hard work, I will be a practicing attorney only months after receiving my J.D.”

“I am extremely impressed with the quality of the LL.M. program at TJSL. The faculty and staff are truly interested in the success of their students and are very approachable. The Professors are not only highly knowledgeable in their respective legal field, but also have excellent pedagogic skills, which makes a huge difference on the learning curve. Being able to study in an astonishing facility, with state-of-the-art classrooms, amongst American students, at the amazing city of San Diego makes this experience unique and very enjoyable. Highly recommendable to any lawyer looking to understand and deepen their knowledge of the interesting American Legal System.”

“I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer; I strongly believed that it was one of the best ways to be of service to others. I was a Girl Scout in elementary school and that experience sparked my love for my community, peers, friends, and the world. This evolved into my going to bi-monthly city council meetings when I was in high school to volunteering in the student advisory board in Brea, CA alongside a few of my peers. Now, as a student at TJSL, I’m earning the skills necessary to better serve my community.”
