Updates to the Spring 2012 Schedule (from email sent out on Dec. 20, 2011) :

Trial Practice - We have added another section of Trial Practice.  §170.5 will be taught by Professor Randy Grossman and will meet on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:50 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom.   Students currently on the wait list for another section of Trial Practice will have priority in registration for the new section.  Please send me an email indicating your desire to add §170.5.  Make sure that your schedule will allow the add – you can have no more than 14 units added for the spring and you have no time conflict with the new section.  Email requests will be attended to after we return to campus – Tuesday, January 3, 2012.   Priority registration will end on Friday, January 6, 2012.  At that time the class will be open to all students if space is available.

Federal Criminal Sentencing Law - With nearly 95 out of 100 criminal cases being resolved without a trial, sentencing has become the major litigation battleground in federal and state criminal courts.  In the last six years, federal sentencing law has undergone a major shift in paradigm toward judicial discretion, while still anchored in the former system driven by detailed, fixed calculation based on uniform factors and standards.  This course teaches students how to navigate this new, hybrid system, focusing on both the legal trends shaping the new regime and the advocacy resources needed to litigate sentences before district judges and courts of appeals.  The combined expertise of the instructors will provide participants with the detailed, practical skills and conceptual understanding to advocate successfully in federal sentencing.
