LLM Program of Study

Each program offers a mix of required classes and electives, which can be tailored to student interests.  Each student will meet individually with the Director of their program to discuss their goals and plan an individualized program of students that covers the degree requirements while best serving the students needs.

Students in the American Legal Studies Program are required to take Legal Writing I and Professional Responsibility. Those students wishing to qualify to sit for the California Bar Exam must also take additional bar-tested courses.

Students in the Practice Skills LLM Program may select from a broad array of practice skills classes.

American Legal Studies LLM Program

Introduction to the American Legal System(individually scheduled prior to start of classes)
Legal Writing I3 units (Fall or Spring Semester)
Professional Responsibility3 units (Spring Semester)
Electives – individually selected in conjunction with the Director of the LLM Program18 units (including bar-tested classes for students seeking to take the California Bar Exam)

Practice Skills LLM Program

Required Courses:

Client Interviewing & Counseling2 units
Civil Motion Practice*3 units
Contracts Drafting2 units
Criminal Motions Practice*3 units
Law Practice Management or Solo Practice2 units
Negotiation Theory & Skills3 units
Trial Practice/Advanced Trial Advocacy3 units

*a qualifying externship or clinical experience may be approved in lieu of one of these classes.

And at least six units selected in conjunction with the Director of the LLM Program from the following:

Deposition Practice1 or 2 units
Directed Study1-3 units
Family Law Workshop1 unit
Introduction to IP Practice3 units
Intra-School Moot Court Competition1 unit
Introduction to Mediation1 unit
Patent & Trademark Clinic Seminar3 units
Small Business & Nonprofit Clinic Seminar3 units
Sport Agency Registration & Practice1 unit
Veteran’s Legal Assistance Clinic Seminar3 units
