Professor Smee is an experienced civil litigation and trial attorney, currently serving as a Partner at the National full-service firm of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP. Beginning in the Spring 2022, Professor Smee taught a course in Criminal Procedure at Western Sierra School of Law, and continued teaching and lecturing in Remedies into the Fall 2023. Now at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Professor Smee teaches Remedies.
Professor Smee played baseball on scholarship at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he received several scholar-athlete awards, and graduated in 2000, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. In the fall of 2000, Professor Smee attended California Western School of Law on a full-tuition merit scholarship, served on Law Review from 2001 to 2003, and graduated magna cum laude.
As a former Deputy District Attorney for the Tulare County District Attorney, Professor Smee served as the lead prosecuting attorney in 11 jury trials, over 30 bench trials in Juvenile Court matters, and approximately 50 preliminary hearings. Now as a civil trial attorney, he has served as the first chair in 5 jury trials; and as the second chair in 3 jury trials. This experience in trials and evidence has also led to appellate work before the California Fourth District Court of Appeal and the United States Courts for the Ninth Circuit. Several of those cases resulted in reversals of trial court judgments and reported decisions.
Outside of the office and classroom, Professor Smee enjoys spending time with his wife of 25 years, and their three children. On the weekends, he also enjoys attending worship service at Emmanuel Faith Community Church, playing golf and watching football and baseball.
