TJSL Alumni & Friends Golf Tourney Benefits Veterans Legal Clinic
November 2, 2010
Nearly 90 TJSL alumni, students, staff, faculty and friends of the law school got together at the Riverwalk Golf Course on Friday, October 15, for an afternoon of fun and to support the TJSL Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic by participating in the 15th Annual TJSL Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that proceeds from the golf tournament will be used to award scholarships for the TJSL students who work at the clinic and provide much needed legal services to the veterans. The Clinic is a successful collaboration with Veterans Village of San Diego and, through their legal assistance, TJSL students help struggling veterans to regain full participation in society.
Tiffany Gilmartin ’10 is currently a Veterans Clinic Fellow and a past recipient of a Veterans Clinic scholarship for the quality of her work. Gilmartin spoke at the awards dinner that concluded the golf tournament and credited TJSL Professor Steve Berenson, faculty director of the Veterans Clinic, for teaching her about the law and how to assist our veterans.
“I learned so much in the Veterans Clinic as a student,” says Gilmartin. When I had the opportunity to come back and work at the Clinic as the new fellow, I could not pass it up. I cannot think of a better person to learn under than Steve Berenson.”
At this year’s awards ceremony it was announced that the annual golf tournament chairing responsibilities would be passed from John Agle ’94 to Renee Galente ’08, starting with the 2011 Golf Tournament.
“I’m thrilled to take over the golf committee responsibilities from John Agle, who has done an amazing job over the past several years, and I look forward to staying involved with the Thomas Jefferson School of Law as it blazes a trail as a leading law school, not only in Southern California, but in the country,” said Galente.
TJSL Dean Rudy Hasl and recently retired Professor and Library Director Karla Castetter, who hasn’t missed many tournaments in the 15-year history of this popular Alumni Association event, were among the many golfers enjoying the afternoon on the links. One of the highlights of the tournament came when Cindy Greenwald, an annual player on John Agle’s Golf Buds foursome, shot a hole-in-one, proving she’s a skilled player, if not a very lucky one as well!
Overall, if was a great day for the tournament participants, made possible by the tireless efforts of the Golf Committee, the Alumni Relations & Development Office staff, the student volunteers and the many valued supporters of the tournament.
