The San Diego County Library (SDCL) Local Author Program celebrated its golden anniversary on January 29, 2016. This annual event brings exposure to local literary talent, nurtures the pursuit of the writing arts in San Diego, and showcases the past year’s books published by local authors.

The SDCL calls for submissions in September of each year, alerting known San Diego County book authors to submit their published books for display at this annual event. Participants are invited to attend a special preview and reception prior to the public unveiling.

Thomas Jefferson School of Law Professor William Slomanson was honored for his 2015 casebook on California Civil Procedure (5th ed., with two Hastings co-authors). This is Professor Slomanson’s 13th appearance at the Local Author’s Awards celebration, and his 25th book.

As Professor Slomanson acknowledged: “I was thrilled to represent the school at this year’s gathering of San Diego’s literary community. Other faculty members—including Marjorie Cohen, Marybeth Herald, and Aaron Schwabach—have been so honored in prior years. This is a fabulous connection for Thomas Jefferson School of Law, with the prominent institution located right in our own backyard!”

Professor Slomanson invited Visiting Professor Dr. Sandor Szemesi and his Research Assistant (Henny) to attend this event as Thomas Jefferson Law invitees. As Professor Szemesi described it: “We appreciated being invited to the Local Author Exhibit at the San Diego Public Library—the most beautiful stand-alone library building we have ever seen. This was a great opportunity, for both San Diegans and Europeans, to experience the literary life of our new host city. We appreciated the diversity of this exhibit. The legal works category was the most interesting part of the event for us. We were especially proud that our colleague and friend, Prof. Slomanson, was included among the hononorees.”

The public portion of the SDCL Exhibit runs throughout the entire month of February 2016, in the Dickinson Popular Library at the San Diego Central Library @Joan & Irwin Jacobs Common. Submitted publications are also exhibited in an online gallery that lasts throughout the year. The Online Exhibit showcases authors and their information throughout the year including books, photos, publishers and bios. It opens at the same time as the live Exhibit in February, and closes in December.
