Three Days of Memorable Events: TJSL Dedication Celebration

January 15, 2013

Dedication Celebration

Thomas Jefferson School of Law will celebrate the official dedication of our new law school during three days of exciting events February 7-9.

On Thursday evening, February 7, at 5 p.m., there will be a formal Dedication Ceremony at the historic Balboa Theater at Horton Plaza in Downtown San Diego, featuring a special appearance by United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Recently retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil Carlos Ayres Britto and former French Supreme Court Justice and French Cabinet Minister for European Union Affairs Noëlle Lenoir will attend, along with current Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Dias Toffoli.

This is a great opportunity for members of the TJSL community and their guests to see and hear Justice Ginsburg.  She also will speak at the Women and the Law Conference the following day, but that event has no more seats available due to popular demand.

The Dedication Ceremony will be followed by an open house at the law school starting at 6:30 p.m., featuring several fun events, including the presentation of the 2013 Alumni Wall of Fame Awardees and the unveiling of a new sculpture commissioned as a gift for the law school by the Alumni Association.

In order to attend the Dedication Ceremony and Open House, all attendees must be registered in advance at Dedication@tjsl.edu.  Only those guests who have registered will be admitted at check-in  at the Balboa Theatre and at the law school.  Register by Friday, February 1.

On Friday, February 8, TJSL presents its sold-out 13th Annual Woman and the Law Conference HER HONOR: Women in the Judiciary, featuring honored guest Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg will participate in a question and answer session in the late afternoon.  Another honored guest is Susan Williams, the Walter W. Foskett Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Constitutional Democracy at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and a former clerk of Justice Ginsburg.

Professor Williams has a keynote role in this year’s conference as the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lecturer.  After her 2003 visit to Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Justice Ginsburg graciously lent her name to the lecture series, which has become the keynote presentation of this annual conference that focuses exclusively on issues related to gender and the law.

Saturday night, February 9, is the gala 2013 Barristers Ball Masquerade at the San Diego Bayfront Hilton. This is the social event of the year, where students, faculty, alumni and their guests celebrate together in their in their finery and witness an awards ceremony for those who stood out during the past year among all members of the TJSL family, and that includes the presentation of the A. Thomas Golden Alumnus of the Year Award.  The Barristers Ball is always a memorable occasion and sells out quickly.  To purchase your tickets, visit www.tjsl.edu/sba/events/barristers-ball-2013.

It is going to be a glorious and wonderful weekend of celebration for everyone in the TJSL family and friends, and we hope you are able to attend one or more of these amazing events!
