Law School Closed Friday, September 9th

Classes are cancelled for Friday, September 9, 2011, however the building is open because power has been restored.

The TJSL Library will be open at 10 a.m. Friday, with limited staffing and will probably close early this evening.

All classes, practices and events scheduled for this weekend will proceed without interruption as planned.

The Parkade is open for use as well.

When the power to the law school went out, about 3:40 p.m., the emergency generator system took over to provide limited power to the building, as people evacuated.

The school’s generator kept the IT server up and running through the night until power was restored around 1 .a.m.

“We had enough fuel capacity in the generator to ride out an event like yesterday,” said TJSL’s Director of Information James Cooper. “All critical data systems stayed up and running, including Internet, telephone and email, the most critical communications tool.”

Evening classes were cancelled and many students gathered in front of the school before they headed out into gridlocked traffic – although some lucky students who live near the school got to walk home.

La Raza president Amber Nevada was disappointed that the organizations barbeque scheduled for the Entrada rooftop Thursday night had to be cancelled.

Other students were happy to have the evening free, even though things were semi-chaotic around the entire San Diego region.

The decision to cancel Friday classes was announced shortly after midnight by email.

In terms of keeping TJSL’s data systems running, “we are very pleased that last night turned out to be a success,” said Cooper. “Had we been forced to shut down the server, it would have been very disruptive. We survived it!”

“Thanks to Assistant Dean for Facilities Services Lisa Bruce and Facilities Manager Dennis Sable for their efforts and to others who were on site during the power outage. Let’s use the blackout as a chance to rethink our notification systems and improve our emergency response,” said TJSL Dean Rudy Hasl.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

The School of Law subscribes to an emergency notification system that is available to all students, faculty, and staff.  TJSL owned mobile phones are added to this service by default.

If you have not already added your personal mobile phone, please sign up for this free service today. The notification system can alert users via text message and an alternate email address to ensure you receive critical announcements.

When you create a new account, please select the TJSL Phones, not the TJSL checkbox.
