Dean Hasl, Two TJSL Alumni Win Bar Association Community Service Awards
April 1, 2013
Thomas Jefferson School of Law Dean Rudy Hasl and two TJSL alumni are being honored at the San Diego County Bar Association’s Law Week Luncheon and Celebration and Community Service on April 30. According to the SDCBA, the annual awards recognize distinguished individuals and organizations for their commitment to serving the San Diego community.
Dean Hasl will be given the SDCBA’s 2013 Service to the Legal Profession Award, for his major contributions to the San Diego Legal community.
“I am deeply honored by the recognition of my activities by the San Diego County Bar Association,” said Dean Hasl. “I believe deeply in the values of our profession and have enjoyed working with the Bar Association on projects that bring the bench, bar, and academy closer together. “
Renee Galente ‘08, who is the president of the TJSL Alumni Association, is receiving the Outstanding Service by a New Lawyer Award for her community involvement.
“My jaw dropped when I found out that I won the SDCBA award, it was totally unexpected,” said Galente. “I had actually submitted a nomination on behalf of someone else for this award, through Lawyers Club! It’s an incredible honor and the outpouring of support from friends across the legal community when it was announced has been absolutely heart-warming. I feel very lucky to be a part of the organizations that I’m in, and lucky to have the opportunity to give back to the community through them. It’s a joyous part of practicing law.”
Nory Pascua ’98 will receive the SDCBA’s Service to Diversity Award. A solo practitioner handling primarily family law cases, she recently completed a 3-year term as an SDCBA Board Member. While on the Board, she co-chaired the Law Student Outreach and Programming Committee; served on the Audit Committee, Membership Committee, Purview Committee, and Membership Benefits Committee; was the Board Liaison to the High School Mock Trial Committee and Workers’ Compensation Section; represented the South Bay region and was involved in the South Bay Court’s Beautification Project. She has also served as President of the Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego; had been involved with the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego and National Asian Pacific American Bar Association; and has participated in the statewide Bench-Bar Coalition’s lobbying efforts in support of the judicial branch’s budget and legislative priorities.
“I am honored to be receiving this award from such a distinguished organization and feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to serve,” said Pascua. “Thomas Jefferson School of Law has taught me, by example, the importance of diversity in the legal profession, and I am ecstatic to be recognized for promoting and encouraging diversity.”
The event will be held at the Westin San Diego Emerald Plaza, 400 West Broadway in San Diego and runs from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.
