Egyptian Dignitaries Visit Thomas Jefferson School of Law

On Friday, May 11, TJSL welcomed a second delegation from the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program.
The first delegation had individuals from the Middle East and North Africa. This delegation included three Judges, a District Prosecutor, and a general counsel, all from Egypt.
The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Launched in 1940, the IVLP seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. These visits reflect the International Visitors’ professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.
Associate Dean of Graduate and Distance Education Programs William Byrnes discussed distance education and the LLM degrees offered at TJSL, including the benefits of extensive knowledge of web conferencing and videoconferencing capabilities in an international legal environment where face to face interaction is impractical. Professor Thomas Golden outlined the requirements of foreign attorneys to become a member of a state bar in the United States, and how the 10th Amendment leaves regulations (such as becoming an attorney) to the states.
The delegation left impressed by the magnificence of the school’s building and the growing reputation of TJSL, especially in distance and international education.
