Alex Kreit is a leading expert in the field of illegal drug and marijuana law. He is author of the casebook Illegal Drug and Marijuana Law (Carolina Academic Press 2d ed. forthcoming 2019), co-author of the reference book Drug Abuse and the Law Sourcebook (Thomson Reuters 2013, updated annually) (with Gerald F. Uelmen), and co-author of the casebook Marijuana Law and Policy (Carolina Academic Press forthcoming 2019) (with Douglas A. Berman). He has published over twenty academic pieces, including articles in the Boston College Law Review, the Ohio State Law Journal, and the UC Davis Law Review.
Before coming to Thomas Jefferson, Professor Kreit worked as an associate at Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco and clerked for the Honorable M. Blane Michael on the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Professor Kreit has taught in Thomas Jefferson’s study abroad programs in Hangzhou, China and Nice, France, and as a visiting faculty member at Boston College Law School and the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He continues to practice law as a member of the Appellate Defenders Inc. panel, representing indigent defendants in state criminal appeals by court appointment.
Professor Kreit is frequently quoted in the media on drug policy and marijuana law issues, having appeared in news outlets including CNN Headline News, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, NPR, the San Diego Union-Tribune, Slate, the Wall Street Journal, and WIRED. In 2019, the National Law Journal selected Professor Kreit to its list of Trailblazers in Cannabis Law.
Professor Kreit is actively involved in the community. Since 2013, he has served as a member of the City of San Diego’s Ethics Commission, which is responsible for administering and enforcing the City’s governmental ethics laws. From 2009 to 2010, he served as Chair of the City of San Diego’s Medical Marijuana Task Force.
For the Fall 2019 semester, Professor Kreit is at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, as a Visiting Professor in affiliation with Moritz’s Drug Enforcement and Policy Center.
